General Information
Body contouring is the term used to describe various types of cosmetic surgical procedures. It includes liposuction, procedures to lift various parts of the body (thigh lift, arm lift, breast lift), abdominoplasty, as well as breast reduction or augmentation procedures.
A body lift is recommended when there is excess skin in certain areas of the body that begins to sag. The procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining skin. As we age, the skin loses its elasticity and tone, and as a result of gravity and the loss of subcutaneous tissue, it begins to sag. The same thing happens when a person loses a significant amount of weight: the excess skin can no longer adapt and conform to the new, slimmer figure. In these cases, the only effective treatment is body contouring, which can remove the excess skin.
Body contouring procedures cannot, of course, replace exercise and a healthy lifestyle and diet. They should under no circumstances be confused with weight-loss procedures. These procedures do not actually result in weight loss (or if they do, it is only a side effect); they reshape the body and remove fat deposits and excess skin from areas where exercise and diet alone cannot be effective. The basic rule for liposuction is that the patient must be within 20% of their ideal weight. Similarly, body lifts and abdominoplasty are intended for people who have lost a significant amount of weight; they are by no means recommended for obese individuals as a method of weight loss!
Today, more and more obese people are losing weight through bariatric surgery, and as a result, body lift procedures are becoming increasingly common.
